Creating Melodies of Change

The Power of Accessible Arts Education

For the past decade or so, the narrative around arts education has been a bit of a downer, with funding drying up and programs disappearing. Jana Szabo has watched how music education slips away from public schools, leaving many families without access to these valuable experiences for their children. But change is possible, and it often starts with individuals stepping up where the system falls short.

Jana Szabo found her calling in breaking through these barriers. Throughout her career, she’s met many who’ve been unable to attend classes or activities in the arts due to lack of support at home— yet not always about the money, sometimes it’s about emotional backing, or just having someone who believes in you. Recognizing this, Jana’s work has and still does, aim to catalyze those willing to leap into their artistic passions, with families that will be able to provide for their children.

Jana Szabo’s experience working in alternative educational systems and programs that were either supported by the public school systems, or privately owned schools were supportive of such children and families and many of these programs have dwindled because of the lack of public funding. Jana is also currently working with home schooled children where families create their own curriculums for their children and is excited to continue sharing her gifts in these ways, with the creatively driven children in our community, and with families that will be able to support them in some way or another..

Jana Szabo was offered this gift of creative  classes in all genres.  Music, Dance, and fine art.  For Jana, and others in similar shoes, these experiences shaped how she communicates and interacts with the world at large.

Taking matters into her own hands, Jana adopts a proactive approach: ‘Becoming the system’ empowers her and those within the community to architect a new reality for arts education accessibility. It’s about looking for ways to reshape how the community supports itself from within, making sustainable change a collective effort.

Events planned to raise funds mean more than just gathering cash. They create community bonds and a culture where art is celebrated and valued. By community members  supporting these events, you are giving the next generations the gifts of the arts where they may not be able to acquire this on their own. You can be an active participant in nurturing Whidbey’s artistic future for the next generations.

Whidbey Island is a wonderful place as it is a small enough community where we all do have the chance to create change and feel the effect of it. Welcome to “Arts Alive Whidbey” partnered with WIAC!
